In short
Open Job settings, then Extension and switch on Fetch company details from LinkedIn. Companies are queued as jobs are saved.
In the extension popup open the Companies tab and press Fetch companies, or let it run by itself after your searches. Read the results on the Companies page.
Turn on company details
Company details are off until you switch them on, because they add extra page reads on LinkedIn.
How companies get queued
You do not add companies yourself. When the extension saves a job, TimelyDo queues that job's company. A company with five jobs is queued once. The queue is what the Companies tab in the extension lists as waiting.
Fetch companies from the extension
Click the Timelydo icon and open the Companies tab. The number beside the tab is how many companies are waiting.
- LinkedIn and Websites switch between the two lists. The LinkedIn list is what is waiting to be read on LinkedIn. The Websites list holds sites that will be read after their company has been fetched.
- Search the lists. It asks TimelyDo, so it finds every company, not only the first hundred shown.
- Fetch companies reads the waiting companies. While it runs the button becomes Stop with a spinner and a count such as Stop, 4/10.
After your job searches finish, the extension starts fetching companies by itself. You can also start it any time. The extension reads each company's About page with your own LinkedIn session, about 8 to 10 companies a minute for one tab, and pauses between companies.
Fetch one company on its own
Every company in the LinkedIn list has a small play button. Press it to read just that company, with a spinner while it works. It is useful for a company you care about right now, or to try a failed one again.
When a company could not be read
Sometimes LinkedIn does not give a page. When that happens the company counts as could not be read and stays queued. Press the red N could not be read. See why bar in the Companies tab, or the Could not read number on the panel over LinkedIn, to open a table with every company and the reason:
| Reason shown | What it means |
|---|---|
| LinkedIn has no page at this address (404) | The company was renamed or removed. Nothing to do. |
| LinkedIn refused to show this page (401 or 403) | The page needs a different session, or is limited. |
| LinkedIn had a problem (5xx) | A temporary problem on LinkedIn. Try again later. |
| LinkedIn showed a sign in page | You are signed out of LinkedIn. Sign in and try again. |
| The page opened but had no company data in it | LinkedIn showed a different page than expected. |
| LinkedIn sent data for other companies, but none for this address | The address did not match the company on the page. |
| TimelyDo did not save it | The company was read, but saving failed. The reason from TimelyDo is shown. |
Each row has a button to try that company again. A run of the whole queue skips a company that failed in the last 24 hours, so one bad company does not hold everything up. The button on the company always tries it.
The Companies page
Open Jobs and then Companies (/companies). It is laid out like Job Listings, with the list on the left and the open company on the right.
- The header shows how many are fetched and how many are waiting. Waiting companies are listed as Waiting to be fetched.
- Search with suggestions by company name, industry or place. With nothing typed it offers the companies read most recently.
- Filters: All, Fetched or Waiting; a Website filter for companies whose own site was read too; and a sort by recently fetched or A to Z.
- Each row shows the logo, name, industry, headquarters, size and how many of your jobs are at that company. The up and down arrow keys move through the list.
The company on the right shows its tagline, website and LinkedIn links, then About (industry, size, headquarters, founded, followers, people on LinkedIn, the description and specialties), the Website summary when it was read, its colours, and the jobs you saved from that company.
Open a company from a job
On Job Listings, click a company's logo or name. The same details open in a panel beside the job, with its own header that shrinks as you scroll.
Frequently asked questions
Companies are not being fetched at all
Check that Fetch company details from LinkedIn is on in Job settings, that jobs have been saved, and that you pressed Fetch companies or your searches have finished. If a run ended with a message, open the could not read table to see why.
Fetching companies is very slow
One tab reads about 8 to 10 companies a minute, so 250 companies take around half an hour. LinkedIn pages take a couple of seconds each and the extension pauses between them on purpose. Turn on multiple tabs for companies to share the work, and skip companies that keep failing.
What does could not be read mean?
The page for that company did not give usable data. Open the table to see the exact reason for each one, and use the try again button on a row.
Companies with special characters in their names fail
Addresses with accented or special characters, such as a name containing é or ®, are handled. If one still fails, the table shows the reason and you can retry it.
What does the company website setting read?
The content of the home page (title, description, headings), its logo and its main colours, once. TimelyDo reads the site itself after the LinkedIn details are saved.
Is a company read again for every job?
No. A company is stored once per account, however many of its jobs you save. It is read once, then kept.
How do I stop fetching companies?
Press Stop in the Companies tab. It finishes the company it is on and stops. The ones already saved stay saved.
The Fetch companies button is greyed out
Hover over it. Either searches are running and share the one LinkedIn tab (turn on multiple tabs for companies to run alongside), or no company is waiting. A company is queued when a search saves one of its jobs.
