Discounts and Currencies

Taking an amount off an invoice, and working with customers who pay in different currencies.

2 min read Updated October 2026 Invoicing

The short version

A discount is set on the Totals step, as a percent or a fixed amount, and comes off before tax. Each invoice has one currency, taken from the customer or your settings, and TimelyDo never converts or adds up different currencies.

Discounts

Adding a discount

In the invoice editor, open Totals and choose Percent or Fixed amount under Discount. The preview shows the discount line and the new totals at once.

The discount comes off the subtotal before tax is worked out. When the lines have different tax rates, a fixed discount is shared between them in proportion, so each rate is taxed on what is really charged.

Discounts on sent invoices

A sent invoice cannot be changed, so a discount agreed afterwards is given with a credit note. Credit notes take a discount into account in the same way the invoice did.

Currencies

The currency of an invoice

Every invoice has one currency. A new invoice takes the customer's currency when they have one, otherwise your default currency from Invoice settings. You can change it on the Details step while the invoice is a draft.

Customers paying by card pay in the invoice's currency. Currencies without cents, such as the Japanese yen, are shown and charged without decimals.

Products in another currency

Your products and services each have a currency. In the catalog list of the editor, those in another currency are shown apart. Adding one copies the name and details without the price, so you type the price in the invoice's currency. Nothing is converted for you.

Totals per currency

The invoices page, reports and customer pages show each currency on its own. Pick the currency at the top of the invoices page to see its numbers. Amounts in different currencies are never added together.

FAQ

Q

Can I give a discount on one line only?

The discount applies to the whole invoice. For one line, lower its price or add a line that explains the reduction.
Q

Does TimelyDo convert currencies?

No. Each invoice stays in its own currency, and totals are shown per currency.
